Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to clarify the concept of crisis and to provide basic data to develop a valid instrument to measure crisis, and to enhance clear communications between health profession.

Method: This study used the process of Walker & Avant¢¥s concept analysis.

Result: Crisis was defined as imbalance and unstability which was caused by ineffective usual coping strategy, expressed by emotional, cognitive, behavioral change different from usual life, precipitated by some events, and persisted during the limited time. Critical attributes were imbalance, unstability, ineffective coping strategy, time-limited, precipitating event, opportunity, danger, and consciousness of crisis. Antecedents include precipitating event, stress, ineffective usual coping strategy, social support, and personal vulnerability. Consequences of crisis were adaptation, growth, development, maladaptation and mental health problem.

Conclusion: It is hoped that this study will stimulate further exploration of this concept and development of measuring instrument of crisis state.
